The "e-Beetle" ( http://ebeetle.ca/ ) is an electric car project from the University of British Columbia Electric Car Club. It drove through Ottawa on Sept 1, 2010, on it's quest to be the first Battery Electric Vehicle to drive across Canada. Ricky Gu (president of the UBCECC), Colin, and "Bandit" have been stopping at campgrounds across the country to charge up at 220V 50A camper outlets. With a 54 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack capable of 400km @ 100km/h, and a mid-day recharge, they've been able to travel up to 600 km per day, allowing them to travel 5000 km in 9 days of driving and still have plenty of time to talk with people and demonstrate their vehicle for the media. They are proving that electric cars can be built that can travel long distances at highway speeds, reliably, and can cross this vast country of ours using existing electrical infrastructure. After Montreal, they believe they are only a couple of days drive from Halifax (once hurricane Earl gets out of the way). You can follow their progress on their blog at http://ebeetle.ca/ Go, e-Beetle, go!
